Felicitaciones Almolonga.

Cruises

It made me really happy to read about the increasing number of cruises reaching Guatemala in the past year. Dozens of Guatemalan artisans went to Santo Tomas de Castilla, Izabal to offer and sell their products. Last week 2 of the 44 Cruises of the year 2005 reached Guatemala. Different people from the Santo Tomas de Castilla port are trying to increase the number of cruises from 44 to a 100 for the 2006-7 season. According to the Inguat authorities, Guatemala has been offered as a turism destinacion in several international fairs. Cruises reaching Guatemala, leave behind extra income for many people and for our country and at the same time help show our beautiful country to the world. The majority of turists come from the United States, Canada, Denmark and English. Let us hope that we can build the infrastructure needed to keep these places ship shape for the turist to enjoy so that they can tell other to visit Guatemala.

NASA and Quemistry

I was reading with much interest about the new weapons that arqueologist are using to seek and find Mayan ruins that may remain hidden because the jungle. I am referring to satellites and quemistry that have contributed greatly to rediscover these Mayan jewels. The Mayan civilization left many mysteries about their disapperance because they flourish up to the IX century and then disappeared. Many of the Mayan cities have remained, especially the pyramids have survived in the jungle but there are still many that remain hidden. With the help of NASA satellites and quemistry, it is possible to discover new ruins underground. One of the theories about the the Mayan disapperance says that the Maya disappear because of droughts and the cutting of trees. With the help of these tools, It is hoped to learn about the causes of these calamities and learn how to prepare for the future. The first result of these new arqueological methods is the city of San Bartolo, Peten.

Mundo Maya

I was reading with much interest about “Mundo Maya”. Mundo Maya is the name of the airport in Santa Elena, Peten. According to the news, this airpot is being expanded and improved to provide a better service to the Peten area. With the improvements to this airport, it will be possible to accomodate 18 new airlines to this area compared to the 9 airlines that occupy this airport at the moment. Some of the improvements will cover the service to the passengers, which will include a better place to recover bags, immigration and the waiting areas. Another improvement, will be a bigger area for taxis and buses. Iberia, a Spanish airline, is thinking about making ” Mundo Maya” its main terminal for this area. It is hoped that this improvementes will be finished by March or 2007. With these improvements, it is hoped that more turist find an easier way to reach Peten and all its mayan cities. Let’s hope that this improvements will bring more turism to Guatemala to enjoy and wonder about the beauty of this area.

Juan Carlos Sagastume

Mayabrit, the rowing boat where Guatemalan Juan Carlos Sagastume and British Andrew Barret used to compete in the Atlantic Rowing Race arrived in the island of Antigua yesterday. It took these two rowers 66 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. These crew started their dream of crossing the Atlantic, on Nov. 30th, from the Canary Islands. Their goal was to cross the Atlantic in 39 days but because of problems with the weather and a detour of their planned route their goal could not be accomplished according to plan. Of the 28 boats that started the competition, Mayabrit finished in 12 position out of 22 boats that finish the race. I can not even imagine the endurance that one would have to possess to accomplish something like this. It makes me realize once again that when one really wants to do something, and one’s mind is in it, nothing is impossible. Thank you Juan Carlos Sagastume for reminding me of it. I also thank you for putting our country’s name in these kind of competition. You have made us proud.
